Memorial Day Weekend
The local hospitality industry is gearing up for its best Memorial Day weekend on record, tourism officials say, as an improving economy and three years of cabin fever are getting people traveling again. And lower gas prices help, too. Projected weekend occupancy at island hotels and Hilton Head SC Vacation Rentals is 94 percent, the local chamber of commerce said Thursday, the highest rate since officials started keeping records in 1999. more>
Sea Turtle
A 500-pound sea turtle, tired and disoriented after laying a nest of eggs, began heading inland a few days ago. She was rescued by kind and alert residents and, with the help of several Hilton Head Island agencies, set free on Coligny Beach. Her return to the ocean following a taxing and dramatic journey, which took her from the depths of the sea and back to the beach she was born on to lay her eggs and to complete a mysterious natural cycle, is nothing short of wondrous. more>
